@Kiki I know exactly how you feel!! I too am not on any social media except for this site, this site has been my only outlet. I don't do FB, well except for the brief time of creating ShaQueefa DeJoy to troll peeps, but I have since deleted her acct because I didn't want the headache. I don't do any of it period. I don't show myself coz I don't want pics of me out there either. So I hear ya, but Kath was being their goody/funny self. 😉
Thanks for watching. I chose a short video purposely to give a quick synopsis, so mission accomplished. Sorry for technical difficulties, glad you persisted & won!
Funny the mention of all those corpses, where do they put them, is a thought I've recently had watching the war in Ukraine rage on. I've seen mass graves, neighborhood cemetaries, etc and read of roving Russian incinerators and shipments of their dead back to Russia. There likely are many not buried and left to the elements. For the Armenians, the march to the desert killed many on the way. Perhaps those who died then were simply kicked to the side of the road or under brush to clear the path. Those who reached the desert were left to die, after which the buzzards and bobcats probably had a little snack. There wasn't much meat on the bones, though, as they were victims of starvation as well. Reminds me of what Putin was doing in Mariupol. One story my grandfather told was that many Armenians were pushed into the river and drowned, so turned into fish food is what likely happened to those corpses. The particularly haunting recount he repeatedly shared involved our family, and sadly many, many others as well. He said they were rounded up from their homes and tortured. They were buried vertically in the ground up to their heads. He stated the Turks then cut out their tongues, cut off the ears and eyes and left them to die. I guess they were mostly buried? Ugh.
The area is a hotbed of history. America has strategic military bases in Turkey. They are an important NATO ally, and they have partnerhips with both Russia and Ukraine. They are showing supportive leanings for Russiain in this conflict, in my view, and they share a partial border. Turkey has expessed they are not in agreement to allow Sweden and Finland join NATO, even as it touts that they are involved in brokering a deal to end the war. The beat goes on, we'll see how it plays out.
A friend of mine was stationed in Turkey during the 80s. He shared a similar old world style of living, much like your friend in Greece. He said he wouldn't eat the food, that the crops were fertilized with human waste. Not to be too graphic, but that the fields were their porta-potties. He spent as much time as possible on the base and left with a not so positive opinion of the country.
For those of you who choose to watch, the attached documentary a favorite of mine, presents the history in a respectful and interesting way. If needed for reading, have glasses nearby as there are subtitles scattered throughout.
Dip, you are not the only one who couldn't cut it on the Twitter limited characters format, apparently.
Thanks everyone for your time and tolerance. Wishing you all well in these trying times!
Well, I can believe it, given the propensities of humankind. Segue into my ancestry, to ancient times if you go back far enough. My ancesters had the unfortunate destiny to be Armenians settled and living in Turkey in early1900s. My grandfather shared with me many, many stories of the family circumstance at that time, enjoying functional lucrative lives until the atrocities began. He didn't spare me the details & young as I was, I still recall them, five decades later. I like to think he wanted me to share them, one little thing to pass the history down, just my memory of his words, such as I am doing now. Incidently, he escaped by stowing away on a ship bound for America, lucky me.
Here's a video you, as a lover of history, may be interested to watch.
And a happy update is that in 2019, the United States officially recognized the Armenian Genocide.
OMG! I can't/can believe the guy said that. I love astronomy so that's as far as I go with Sagan etc. I also love Native American history . However, my degrees as well as love are in Ancient world history, Egyptology, and Colorado history (geology, Native American, mining/Old West).
I'm sorry, too, for the devastation suffered by the Indigenous & Africans for so many centuries, and continues today & tomorrow, too...damn! What to do, what to do?!? I know that today, I can read your links and become more informed, instead of just scratching the surface, so there's that. I do appreciate you, please know.
Okay, that's new information for me right there! Thanks, Dib! Looks like I have some reading to do! Maybe I can distract myself from the horrific school shooting today, at least for a little while. Not that Grasse-Tyson info is a pleasant read, but this day sucks so bad anyway, why not add more sick shit to the mix?
I appreciate the abilities of Tyson but his character is associated with a number of sexually predatory incidents and accusations as well as compassion lacking public statements.
To paraphrase or summarize his statements involving the Indigenous of the Americas, he stated that among man's greatest achievements was the discovery and conquest of all that was indigenous. He completely disregarded the evil perpetrated upon the people of 2 continents which would include the chattel slavery of Africans. As well native civilizations have contributed much to the world that was previously unknown to them. Simultaneously he disregards the catastrophic ecological damage done here by careless colonization and industrialization.
While I so appreciate all your contributions and inclusive statements here Kiki, I won't be taking your advice on the Tyson celebrating T-shirts. We natives are as invisible to Tyson as the other non-native majorities.
Wicked good find, spread that science bug in the ear, near and far, ignore the deaf ones the message falls on!! In teaching, as advocates for "social promotion" emerged, they touted the "exposure factor" for the kiddo who didn't, or couldn't due to cognitive factors, achieve the objective of the lesson. Maybe your new tank will be a path, exposing some science denier to the issues and their light clicks on. Could happen... however, they may still be a dim bulb. Perhaps Monkeypox will be helpful as it enters into the equation. I've not lost hope, though it does look dire.
OT but curious what do you call a hot day in NM temp wise?
@WTF Vax Up I do my best to share facts with the people around me! Science, history, etc.
I save the word "hot" for temps above 90 degrees. I mean, 80 or 85 doesn't seem so hot when it can be well over 100 here. It's all so fucking relative. I shiver and look for a hoodie if it's in the 70s!
@Kiki For the first time this year, we had a 70 degree day yesterday, today back to the 50s. Funny how your body acclimated to sweaters at 70+ after growing up in NE. That's science for you, forever evolving.
I love it!! Yeah, I have a collection of nerd/dork t-shirts myself, like 80s kids anime cartoon of Voltron (the one with the lions, not the stupid cars!).
@Kiki Nice!! I will try and find a few and post them so you can see them!! Yay, so glad you are on here Kiki, you are awesome, plus you are a fellow, nerd/dork, and I love it!!😍😎
😂🤣....YAY, am happy for you!!! See, due to my overwhelming peer pressure (kidding, I knew you were in the hunt for it, just wanted to take some credit), you were gonna find it!! I want to see a picture, at least from the neck down, of you rockin this fucker!!
Love that!!!
I'm gonna need you to runway model this before I purchase 100 of them 👌

Hey Kiki you know I adore you. I 100% agree with you on the importance of science. I'm on my phone now so no embedding links, fancy stuff, etc.
My fav scientist is Michio Kaku. theoretical physicist and co-founder of string theory.

Edited at home.
I think that's a stereotyped insult to Neil. He is a gentleman.
Today's nerd shirt.
