We just flew to Seattle (2-hr flight) and ferried to Victoria,BC (had to show proof of vaccination).
All activities, where possible, were outside (bars, restaurants), masked in airport and on flights… worth the risk because we were careful. One week later and we are fine…
Kiki, from what I can tell, you’re both very intelligent and smart in your precautions.
What I am about to say might not be a majority opinion, but part of the whole reason for getting any of these vaccines and boosters is so that “normal” life can and will go on.
Is there increased risk to contract Covid vs sitting at home? Undoubtedly.
That being said, what’s the point of all of this? Being vaccinated gives us protection, but thats not to say it makes us bullet-proof.
One of my favorite sayings is “don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough,”. In this case, you’re “good enough” to go.
And I feel so lucky to have met you all. I had a pretty good Twitter account but the misogynists just brought me down. Thank you guys for lifting me up again. 💗
Have a wonderful trip! I'm jealous. I love taking trains; prior to Covid it was the best way to meet people and sometimes make lasting friendships. We all know you've got the precautions to stay safe down cold. Enjoy your family visit.
Sup Kiki? Make sure you hang with us for a bit on your trip. Let us live vicariously thru you!! I've always wanted to take a cross country train travel. Me and Buddy once hopped a rail car train from Erie, PA to Cleveland Ohio. What a wild shit ride that was. Met some true grifters that day.
I have no advice for you whatsoever because I know you already know what you need to do to stay safe. You have good sense and I'm sure you will use it.
Keeks, I agree with ALL of the advice that everyone has given you. So yeah, I have nada to say on any of that. I'm glad you are going to see your family and I hope all goes well.
Leave windows open, wear N95 or similar respirator, be smart about where you breathe unfiltered shared air and you should be fine—although BA5 may put a lie to this since it is so damn transmissible.
No piling on from me, we each have to figure out our own risk tolerance and what we are willing to do to protect ourselves as best as we can since as a community it appears we have collectively decided to just lay back and let the virus do its thing. (Not saying “we“ as individuals but collectively.)
Yes, some trains in Europe allow you to open up the windows but those are more of the old fashioned locomotives which take you on long or short excursions. But, the trains in the UK and Europe are basically the same as here, with one exception, the up keep on those things in second to none!
If it's Amtrak, you can have your meals delivered to your room so you don't have to sit in the dining car with strangers. I am on the Amtrak subreddit a lot and it seems like the staff are wearing masks. I think you'll be fine (since you said you wear masks, are boosted, and take precautions). There have been a lot of people concerned about Covid and taking the train. I can't say it's totally without risk but it's better than being on a plane, in my opinion.
The biggest risk will probably be while you're getting on and off the train and around the station. Since you have a private room, you can get on when you like and can hopefully avoid the crowds.
Mind me asking which line you'll be taking? You don't have to answer or give stations. I just love long train trips so I was curious.
I love the train and I promise to post some pictures! How was the Empire Builder? I'd love to take it, but it's not exactly close to me lol (I'm 30 miles from Mexico!).
One of the best train rides ever, is the Royal Gorge train and for an extremely fun day trip, I would take the Georgetown Loop. Had the most amazing times on both trains, I took my Mom, since she had never gone on either, so that was an epic time.
Go for it!

Yes, time to take calculated risks. Good for you!! Glad you’ve got a sleeper and hope you have a grand time. 🥰

Enjoy the hell out of it.

Wear an N95 and you will be fine. I've traveled on planes quite a bit lately and have not tested positive yet.
