Thanks, Kiki, for this informative read, the seeking to understand alert in me really, really enjoyed it. In other words, I wicked fucking loved it!
Will note that through these past few years, I believed the biggest Shiterator to be concerned about truly was the cheeto guy. "From inside the Shiterator, I can hear the chirps of other roosting bats." Yup, that's him. Mmmm....I had imagined he's one in a long line of shitsters, but certainly he won top honors.
Now this sensory ecologist has me revising my thoughts on that. I knew a little of bat-speak sensory communication but these details are great & well written.
Points of interest I pulled:
~ While collecting data..."mosquitoes bite me through my shirt, attracted by the smell of the carbon dioxide on my breath." wear a mask, could help....
~ "While I itch, an owl flies overhead, tracking its prey using a radar dish of stiff facial feathers that funnel sound toward its ears." Really, bats aren't alone in their natural environment? jk...just kidding, but sadly not considered or really cared about by so many. Also, maybe wear a mask...
~ "But the dark is disappearing." "Even here, in the middle of a national park, light from human technology intrudes upon the darkness." "Lights reshape animal communities, drawing some in and pushing others away, with consequences that are hard to predict." :(
~ I'm so glad for this valuable research, so very glad. 👍 👍
~ "There is a wonderful word for this sensory bubble—Umwelt..... Umwelt is specifically the part of those surroundings that an animal can sense and experience— its perceptual world." I love all best words! 😏
~ "Our Umwelt is all we know, and so we easily mistake it for all there is to know. This is an illusion that every creature shares." See Plato.
~ "We have instigated what some scientists have called an era of “biological annihilation,” comparable to the five great mass-extinction events of prehistory. But we have also filled the silence with noise and the night with light. This often ignored phenomenon is called sensory pollution."
~ Huge illumination of Tribute of Life in NY on 911 is more than meets the eye. Wow! Brand new & sad sad info for me! Super Ugh.
~ "Creatures that have already been confined to narrow corners of shrinking habitats can’t just up and leave. Those that rely on specialized senses can’t just retune their entire Umwelt."
***My vent...how selfish of us to allow destruction of the small but magnificant beauty we're responsible for maintaining in our universe? And force all species around us to our Umwelt just because we can? I'll just say ugh & wtf?***
~ "Colors matter, too." Science....
~ And, then there's the sound factor. So very much noise. Shhhhhh....ya, right.
Not to discount the seriousness of this issue that truly needs to be addressed, I'd be happy to close this post on a positive note, so am bringing this....
@WTF Vax Up It was truly an amazing read and I'm so happy you enjoyed it. One of my takeaways is that conservatives literally don't understand the concept of Umwelt. They seem locked inside their tiny, ignorant, unhappy brains like toddlers who have yet to grasp object permanence and the fact that other people have different points of view.
Only commenting because it's Kiki. Industrialists and capitalist neocons don't care about what will someday be the fatal outcomes of their activities. They want to deny all the science.
We could regulate industries causing sensory pollution, but there’s not enough societal will. “Plastic pollution in the sea looks hideous and everyone is worried, but noise pollution in the sea is something we don’t experience so directly, so no one’s up in arms about it,” Lamont says. And as we desecrate sensory environments, we grow accustomed to the results. Our blinding, blaring world becomes normal, and pristine wilderness feels more distant. [from the article]
We can only see 0.000003% of the galaxy. That's Three ten millionths. which means we are only seeing a tiny fraction of what is from our location within the galaxy...that's all we've ever seen or been aware of. Humans are in their own little bubble as well.
When you look up at a seemingly vast starry night remember, you only see0.000003% of what is there.
I agree that it's naive to think any significant changes will happen. Nothing matters other than Musk and Fuckerberg and Penis Bezos getting ever richer and ever more foully detached from humanity. I think William Gibson predicted this shit.
