I’m going to be out front and admit that I’m a ketovore/keto mixed with intermittent fasting person.
For me, its really the only reliable way to maintain my weight. I can look at a piece of fruit, bread, rice cake, or grains and gain weight.
I used to have a BMI of around 35.
I went full-on keto and not only am I now maintaining at a BMI in the 22-24 range, I’m no longer pre-diabetic and my labs are off-the-charts amazing.
I‘ve got a dear friend who is convinced plant-based eating is the way to go and she constantly struggles with her weight and her health. She’s always sick and has zero energy.
We will never agree on our diets, but we respect each others choices
Look at the work of Rich Johnson. The new knowledge about fructose production is incredible. It even solves why insulin resistance can remain problematic for some people on keto. This is a survival mechanism. The human body is a marvel. Wish fat shaming would stop and education would win. I have to be militant with food just to be functional. No diet is perfect for everyone. Agree with the respect factor, 100%.
@DeathofRats-BadgeHoorMaroon I learn so much from you guys. I cook mostly from scratch, and one interesting outcome from that is how much my tastes changed. I can't stand oversalted food (luckily I don't eat out much) and my sweet tooth converted to a spicy tooth lol. Just recently a friend gave me a 100% cacao chocolate bar, i.e., unsweetened. It was delicious!
Hard agree on education and a crackdown on fat-shaming. No one chooses that shit; it's our fucked up capitalist society. I've heard some skinny people moan that they get shamed too. Bullshit. If they do, it's not the same thing at all, and I say that as a mean, skinny bitch.
Just wanted to chime in and say that I'm vegan for these reasons (in ascending order of importance): 1.) cruelty/torture of animals raised for meat, eggs, dairy 2.) environmental impact 3.) my own health 4) weight control (being vegan automatically cuts out a lot of really bad crap food) 5.) my personal preference for vegetables, fruits, legumes, and nuts/seeds
I will eat that whole thing so Kiki doesn’t have to. I’m a socialist and team player. Let me at it. I’m sure it will be inflammatory but I’ve got fucktons of curcumin. Let’s roll!
I just want to say that it doesn’t prove the power of a plant based diet. It does appear to show that outcome was better for healthier nurses and a percentage of them were plant based. I’d have to really blast it all apart but it essentially boils down to what we already know: sicker people, worse outcomes. It doesn’t, however, pit healthier groups following different diets against one another for outcome. These types of studies aren’t really studies at all. We might even be able to find a correlation between bathtub vs shower stall. The problem with nutritional science is that they can’t lock people into boxes for years on end. And the problem with the reporting on these is that they can be easily manipulated. These types of things are one of my biggest pet peeves. Eat plant based if it works for your body. Be mindful that if you think it’s for the planet, it might not be the case. I gave up avocados for months when I found out they were ripping down irreplaceable forests for punch the trees in. Now I’ve eaten some again and I’m feeling guilty I might have killed a forest. Anyway, peanut gallery out.
@DeathofRats-BadgeHoorMaroon Lol I adore you and I appreciate this conversation. Personally I am vegetarian because of animal welfare, but I also try to be healthy and conscious on many levels. I appreciate your honesty, facts, and good faith interactions. 💗
@Kiki Air ferns for the win! If times get harsh then I switch back to all potatoes. No fat, high carb, low salt diets also trigger a different metabolic pathway that works for some people. Briefly helped me feel better but I think the lectins went to high in the long run. I know it’s a very doable, cheap and survivable diet if times are harsh, though. Add in insects for protein. I know that’s not vegetarian but I gotta outlast Republicans. I appreciate all dietary convos. Metabolism, longevity, and the corporate food culture here are my most obsessive mental scaffolding. Ever seen the data on prison violence when they cleaned up their diets? I see networks upon networks about why we don’t make progress, but instead farm humans.
@DeathofRats-BadgeHoorMaroon The corporate food culture is so depressing. They have blood on their hands, exacerbated by covid. Tons of people aren't living with HPB, diabetes, and obesity by accident. And it takes a lot of self-education, time, and money to eat healthy.
This doesn't surprise me. Plant-based eating helps with so many things. Plus, I really enjoy eating more now that I don't have animal products in the mix. I think more about what I eat and my meals taste much fresher and don't gross me out like meat did. (I'm 56, have a BMI of 21, which is the exact center of the "healthy range," walk at least five miles a day, and have no health problems at all.)

All that plus the nice cold meals we can enjoy in the summer!
