McGonigal was named Section Chief of the Cyber-Counterintelligence Coordination Section of the Counterintelligence Division in 2016. McGonigal was named "Special Agent in Charge of the Counterintelligence Division for the New York Field Office", Oct 4, 2016, appointed by James Comey. He retired in 2018.

Here is a C-Span conversation with Former CIA case officer Kevin Carroll talked about his piece for "The Dispatch" on Charles McGonigal, the former FBI official accused of taking secret cash payments from a sanctioned Russian oligarch.
