This story was not on the main page because, although he came close to death, Bill was not on social media passing on memes and killing others by sharing his stupidity. His is a story of redemption… I saw his book on the shelf downstairs and wondered if he had recovered at all from his ordeal.
Bill Phillips started out wanting a career in bodybuilding in the 80s, but instead studied exercise physiology and sports nutrition at the University of Denver. His magazines for bodybuilders spun into marketing meal replacement supplements/EAS Creatine/nutrition shakes and his 1999 book Body for Life was a huge hit. It was a 6 X 6 -- 12-week program of nutrition and exercise. Exercise 6 days per week, 20 minutes a day, with three days cardio and three days strength weights/resistance training and 6 meals a day.
I tried it but there was so much paperwork and so few facilities in hotels and places to eat properly when travelling so much for work.I had lifted weights in my 20 and 30s so that was easy… eating 6 meals and tracking intake was not.I know a lot of people who were able to look like the many pictures in the intro.I was never one.
In 2021, at age 56 and with Delta making the rounds, Bill’s blood oxygen was so low he was lucky to have survived the trip to the hospital. He had full blown COVID pneumonia, and his blood Oxygen was in the 50s.
His wife tells her side first as she watched him fight for his life.
January 7, 2021, age 56.
June 27, 2021. Bill’s 3rd day in the ICU.
Bill’s wife Maria message ftom Fecesbook:
Bill was subsequently 60 days in the ICU, 47 days on a ventilator, lost 70 lbs and had 1% chance of recovery. He said he had COVID in January 2020 and assumed antibodies gave him natural immunity. He now says he “made a mistake” and urges everyone to get vaccinated. This next part is truly remarkable...
The last I heard of Bill 'til this post, was this video made in August 2021
In August he left the hospital and it was on the news
A bodybuilder’s memes… and another reason Bill did not belong on the SAV list...
Bill told his story of recovery in pictures and so will I.
November 2021, healing and getting back into shape.
Getting the vaccine December 2021 - Waiting 90 days before the shot is recommended.
Bill is thankful and kind, which is why he is not on theSAV list of swine who killed others with misinformation and then killed themselves.I am glad that I looked in to see how he was doing. He is owning his stupidity... and thankful to those that he knows saved his life.
Caveats: There were only -literally- minute amounts of people tested for COVID in January 2020. The chances that one of them was Bill is REALLY remote. He may have mistaken a bad flu for COVID back then. Also, he denies his quick build up to muscle was ever steroids, with exception being his 80’s body as he readily admits, but it is well known that taking them makes people more susceptibleto COVID and to have more severe outcomes. Given his questionable COVID in 2020 that he often touts, the second caveat might also be necessary. Also, he says that his lungs are completely healed. Healing of lungs involves scarring… and although some tissue can regenerate, it is highly unlikely that it would in someone his age and the science on functional alveolar regeneration is still up in the air. (I just read about this, but bear with me as I try to find that recent study…)
He may also still be on oxygen for all we know… when not in a picture. He also makes his living with supplement and bulk up shakes sales. Not knowing what is in them… I will remark here that anyone in sales markets the product with hype and he is indeed part of that hype…and they may or may not be safe to take for everyone, especially females, so don’t take anything you read here as an endorsement.
I could never be a body builder, and I am far too old to bring back the muscle of my youth or even much muscle, but I cracked open the book again. He inspired me to try (Using age appropriate weights of course)... and I got some extra emergency puffers just in case. Long COVID and 2 new illnesses are trying to get the better of me so I am too weak and overweight to do it whole hog... but I am kinda tried of saying "alive and kicking" when asked how I am.
PS: I also had some testing done and was short B12 and iron! No wonder I was so weak... Age and illness and the fighting COVID can affect absorption and metabolism and I (and my Doc) should have checked for vitamin deficiencies earlier. I am now really thankful my regular Doc was on vacation... (When I told my Doc my Long COVID symtoms last winter she said...I had COVID too you know) I won't expect miracles, but Just walking more than 15 feet without huffing and puffing would be nice... and after only a few days I feel so much better already.
