    Hospital boredom

    in General Discussion

Anyone got any ideas on how to relieve hospital boredom?

My 83 year old Dad has been in hospital for almost two weeks with a broken leg. As of today all visits have been cancelled for the foreseeable because a patient on his ward has tested positive for Covid. Myself and his other children have made sure that one of us has been there at every visiting time and it’s breaking my heart thinking of him not having any real company for who knows how long. I know he’s been bored lying in a hospital bed all day and I’m sure it will be worse now. His eyesight hasn’t been quite right since he has been in hospital so reading is difficult. He’s not very tech savvy, he can just about answer and make calls on his smart phone, so a tablet is not really an option. We brought him a radio with headphones but they interfere with his hearing aid. Any ideas of anything I could bring him that would help put the time in?

ok, not a smart ass answer, his eyes are bad and hearing is bad. What does he normally do all day? Perhaps getting closer to that would be good If possible.

also tech wise an Amazon fire tablet might figure in. he could watch nexflix, tv or listen to audible books. They are dirt cheap and Alexa enabled. Get a case with a kickstand also. That will give a more tv presentation. These are really Good devices and can do almost everything an android tablet will, and if you get a little more tech, you can add google apps.

my MIL is 88 and completely non tech so we got her an Amazon echo for home so we can vid call her without her having to do anything. I tried to get her to use an iPad and she couldn’t swing it, to complicated. The echo she can manage just by asking.

Thank you for your comment. My father can normally hear well enough with his hearing aid but he is using his older one that doesn’t work as well. We think his new one got lost somehow in the accident or ambulance. Headphones don’t work well with his old one. His eyesight was ok before the accident but now he’s having trouble focusing or something. Someone suggested a magnifier and I will try that. Can’t hurt to try.

I find a tablet is easier to use than a phone. Does he like music? I hope he's feeling better soon.

He has a tablet but finds it difficult to use. Maybe I could rearrange the apps on it to make it easier for him to use, just have one app on the home screen, just a video chat app?

My dad had eye sight issues and isn't tech savvy (he owns a flip phone, kid you not) and I bought him a basic Amazon reading Kindle. You can pre download any book he might like and you can make the print very large. I'm so sorry, and I wish your dad a speedy recovery.

It would be difficult to teach him how to use a kindle and I am not allowed in at the minute, but thank you for your suggestion.

A large print book? Books on tape with some simple playback device? I use an old .mp3 player, sorta like this:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-clip-jam-8gb-mp3-player-blue/4396004.p?skuId=4396004

Mine just plays music or audio books on tape. No pictures. No fancy controls.

A large, simple keyboard like this is a plus.

I was talking to one of his daughters today and described it. She says they have them where she works and will get one for him.
