It's dangerous to be an American

    in General Discussion

As you know, we hit 1 million deaths from Covid the other day and it was a milestone. But it was only one of the causes of death that seems to be propagating in this country.

Just think about how many mass shootings we've had in this year alone. How many car accident deaths were there last year? How many suicides were there in the US last year?

We live in the most dangerous country in the world and we seem unwilling or unable to change it. No other country has such horrific statistics of death from these causes-many countries don't allow private gun ownership without a very heavy lift.

And yet, we're used to it. That's why this whole pandemic is just being shrugged off-we like living in the land of death as long as we're able to do whatever we want:

COVID's Death Milestone And Mass Shootings: Is Mass Death The New Normal?

@TheyShouldHaveVaxxed Fuck Xi. He's not China.

At least the Chinese don't have to worry about their kids getting shot.

But back to the main topic at hand:

I am not ever going to dump my mask while I'm in public, even when deaths are decreasing-because the next variant is out there somewhere, just waiting to pounce and chances are that it might be the one that breaks the vaccines and boosters to really kill more people.

Sure, you can say we've moved on, but the virus is still here, and will remain here for the duration. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

As a country, the US has moved on. Based on the simple metric of how many people wear a mask in a crowded grocery store around here, I would have to say that somewhere around 3% of the people in my area are still taking it seriously. As cases continue to climb, everyone is acting like it has been over for a while. I think that part of it has to do with deaths not really climbing much with this latest surge. That is the only measure i]of severity that seems capable of shaking at least some people awake. Now that we don’t have 2000+ deaths per day, they think of it as nothing meaningful. And the media putting out the message that it is largely over doesn’t help sell that this is something with which we should still be concerned. Of course all of this ignores long COVID and other complications. Long COVID is barely given a thought.

‘’Gone are the days of people wearing masks to protect others. Protecting ourselves is now solely our job, if we choose to do it. This is a country filled to the brim with selfish people. As usual, it’s every person for their self.
