    Pitbull Attacks

    in General Discussion

Woman Attacked by her Own *Dog* When they don't say what breed it was, it's like antivaxx families not saying the cause of death in the obits. Spoiler alert: Beach's Facebook said she owned a Dogo Argentino and a Pitbull and the Dogo just died. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6cV_Rw3rjs

I have an American bulldog, which looks something like a Pitt in that she is extremely strong for her size. I have two jobs as a dog owner:

    1. Establish myself as the alpha and elevate the status of our cats so Bulldog understands the pecking order as I see it.

    2. Always keep her leashed or fenced. Period. I've never seen her get aggressive, but I live on the assumption that she has the potential do do a lot of damage. I never allow her the chance.

I like Pit Bulls, but I never trust any large dog that I don't own. Yesterday my neighbor's Pit Bull got out of their fenced yard and stopped by to say "hi" to me as I was gardening. This dog and I are on friendly terms, but I trust him not at all.

The most batshit crazy, aggressive dog I've ever owned was a diminutive Chocolate Labrador. She was absolutely sweet toward people but would attack other animals on sight. I got rid of her.

You sound like a very reasonable dog owner and sometimes those are in short supply. People who have large dogs like pits should at least be aware of the capability of the dog to do a lot of damage. The people who are all “my pibbie is the sweetest thing and would never do a thing to hurt anyone” are not doing anyone any favors. Sure, it is likely that the dog will never do anything. But these dogs have the capacity for great damage. Ignoring it because someone thinks it could never happen is courting disaster. It is more reasonable to know what could happen and keep watch. No matter how people act toward dogs, they are animals. Best to keep that in mind.

There is a lack of serious scientific study of the supposed aggression of American pit bull terriers. Dog fanciers and those who cater to the dog industry will tell you they are the sweetest creatures on earth. Of course, a place called dogsbite.org will tell you they are the devil incarnate. And the media has a heyday with any pit bull attack, no matter how unrepresentative an isolated incident may be.

Never met a pit or a rottie that wasn't an absolute sweetie. Education should be required before anyone can own animal. As a former horse trainer (and human educator) I can attest to the fact that many people these days have no idea how to behave around animals. Dogs have been bred for generations to serve a purpose (like protection) and then people all of a sudden expect them to "overcome" that and be chill in highly populated areas with no direction. It's absolutely absurd. It's not that it can't be done, just that it takes effort and some education. Breaks my heart to see working dogs like collies and shepherds in an urban environment. Talk about a fish out of water.

Like antivaxxers, a lot of you are spreading a bunch of bullshit. Pitbulls aren't inherently meaner or more violent dogs. People abuse them and make them that way.

You are mistaken. Pit bulls were bred to attack, fight, & kill other animals. No other breed of domestic dog was bred for that purpose. You can't train the herding instinct out of a Border Collie. Why do you think you can train the fighting genetics out of a pit? Animals that have been wonderful well cared for family dogs will suddenly without any warning snatch the baby off of Grandma's lap & the adults present can't get it off of the baby. That's also a special inbred pit bull trait. They kill their own adult owners. They kill children they know. They break out of their yards & kill the lady next door that's gardening. They maim and kill hundreds of thousands of domestic pets & livestock. Pits & Rots are responsible for about 75% of the fatal attacks and all of the other breeds combined make up the rest. It's not the breed it's how they're raise is the myth that's responsible for the maiming of thousands of people & the killing of around fifty per year here in the USA. That's what I thought too until I actually studied the dog bite issue. Dogsbite.org is an excellent resource for dog bite statistics, reports, & related information.

I was attacked by a German Shepard on the beach in LA. I was jogging. It just came up out of nowhere and took a chunk out of my leg. I ran into the water to get away. Thankfully it stopped attacking me. If I didn't I would have died a horrible death. Years later my young daughter and I were riding bikes in our neighborhood and were charged by 4 pit bulls from someone's yard. I panicked and fell off my bike. An invisible fence stopped them. If it hadn't, both of us would be dead. There is nothing you can do to stop a dog attack. Read about the coach who was mauled in her doorway by neighbor's dogs. Please don't underestimate the damage some dogs can do. I almost had to witness my young daughter mauled to death. Dog owners act like it is the job of other humans to manage the dogs. "You should have done this..." or "You were not supposed to this..." It's bullshit. Even dog owners are killed by their dogs.

More than 400,000 people die from homicide each year [world wide] link
In the United States, more than seven people per hour die a violent death. In 2019, more than 19,100 people were victims of homicide and over 47,500 people died by suicide. link
The absolute number of war deaths has been declining since 1946. In some years in the early post-war era, around half a million people died through direct violence in wars. In recent years, the annual death toll tends to be less than 100,000. link

Yes animals can be dangerous and I believe prevention is a good measure. Some places have banned certain breeds. I believe other places require insurance for specific breeds. I've owned both a pit and a Rott. They were both amazing and wonderful friends. I went to dog training classes so mine were both well disciplined. But yes they are animals. The pet raccoon I had was the meanest pet I ever had.

But what are we going to do about humans?

Until it does show aggression. Sometimes they just seem perfectly fine until they're not. And when that happen, it can get traumatic real fast.

Mr. Monster and I have friends who found a dog that they determined was part pit bull. She busted through the baby gate when they weren't home and murdered a kitten that they had also found. I thought she should be put down, but she wasn't. Not long after that, they heard a yelp coming from the back yard. They determined that that dog had gotten her collar caught in something, freaked out, thrashed around, broke her own neck and died. I was so relieved! I never felt safe around her. They have another dog who appears to be full pit bull that they also found. The vet determined he was likely used as a bait dog. But he is the sweetest thing, never showed any sign of aggression at all.

I have real problems with pits. Never was afraid of any dog in my life, but then a neighbor’s psycho fucking dog tried to get my baby in his stroller. It was me and the dog and I won but it was terrifying. Later that same dog went for my throat when I was out walking. 3rd strike and I was shooting her. County shouldn’t have let her live, tbh. The animal control officers said there were numerous complaints. Yet she wasn’t put down. Conversely, some friends have the sweetest dog I’ve ever met in my life and she’s a pit. She helped me get over my desire to shoot every one of those dogs that I saw.

My mom was almost killed by a Rottweiler that had been a pet for many years. One day it snapped and tried to kill her. It always frightened me. Seeing that thing put down was a happy day because I knew she’d be safe from getting mauled by it.

Pit bulls might not be any meaner than a chihuahua (actually I've known some really nasty chihuahuas) but obviously the chances of a pit bull doing serious, even fatal, damage is significantly higher than an equally vicious chihuahua. What I have noticed (strictly anecdotal) is that some really, really large breeds (Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherd, Spanish Mastiff) are so mellow they are practically Zen personified (or I guess I should say caninified?). But common sense would just tell you that the larger the breed the more damage they can do if they are pissed off. And yes pit bulls account for more deaths than the other 34 breeds combined. The statistics are from a 13 year period (2005-2017 and the chart only shows the top 7 "killer" breeds)

These dogs kill people all the time and nothing is ever done about it.

Often the owners make some kind of statement like, Oh it was a cute doggy and so good with kids, I dunno what happened.

It's generally either Pit Bull or Rottweiller type dogs.
