I figured this might be good for the forum. Curious about other people’s thoughts. Forgive me for being lengthy about it!
So, my wife and I managed to make it two whole years without getting Covid. My wife‘s been vaccinated and boosted, and I received a three shot initial series and received one booster. Since being vaccinated, we’ve been as active as we’ve ever been with traveling, attending events, and we work our normal jobs in contact with the public. We’ve been in close contact with Covid+ people without getting infected. Despite living in FL, we’ve worn masks where and when appropriate, and feel like we’ve “done our part”, but had a feeling we were either getting lucky or that we were next.
We were invited to a get together last month by an extended family member where we didn’t really know anyone else, but thought we should go anyway. We quickly realized we were amongst some folks of opposing political views (not uncommon amongst people we find ourselves around), but as always, conversation turns to Covid. The most vocal of the group (he made sure to let us know HIS president was still Trump) was a chiropractor who despised masks, vaccines, and worshipped Tucker Carlson. Fast forward four days, and I start coughing out of the blue, but had no other symptoms. A few days later, my head is congested and I’m coughing practically non-stop. My wife’s family member contacts her to let her know she’s now positive for Covid. My wife had just started feeling lousy, so we each take a home test and come up positive immediately. Via my wife’s family member, we find out over the next few days that several of the people who attended this get together have tested positive. Ironically, the Trump-humping antivax chiropractor was “rushed to the hospital” by ambulance with trouble breathing. And yes, I’ve searched and searched for a FB page for this guy, but couldn’t find anything. I also didn’t hear anything about him since then, but my question is: how happy should I be about this, or am I a terrible person for feeling this way? Like, karma’s a bitch, right? Because, not only did my wife and I just spend the past two weeks feeling absolutely miserable (and didn’t test negative for 16 days after initial symptoms onset!), but we had to cancel a trip to the Caribbean not to mention miss a ton of work.
I wouldn't feel horrible at all! Guaranteed this asshole has gone around spreading misinformation, especially to his patients and likely even profited off of bogus preventatives and cures for it. Most chiropractor offices aren't complete without some Young Living and bullshit supplements propaganda. There's a good chance he has caused a death or two with his advice.
Like I tell everybody who's hesitating to get the shots: Because nobody has natural immunity, you *will* catch it at some point, and you'll want to be fully vaccinated when you get it. You were smart to be ready.
I attended one of those kind of gatherings last Thanksgiving, my daughter-in-law's people, more people than I expected, and mostly Trumpers. Half of 'em were deluded about the covid, turns out the neighborhood was a covid hotspot at the time. One woman I got in a conversation with was older, worked in a day care, and kept spouting the wildest anti-vaxx propaganda. Lucky I didn't catch it and I hope there was some fallout for some of those folks. I don't feel bad about that, they're a danger to society.
Sad if not horrible story. Sorry you/yours got sick.
The stress surrounding all of this is tiresome - catastrophic. I read a headline the other day saying another wave was was coming around fall. Gaw! It's simply not a situation you can ignore without peril.
Other family members have skated through with mostly minimal problems. I fear for them but won't be surprised if their luck runs out.
Magical or wishful thinking isn't realistic as many find out in tradjic ways. Now it's hard to express good will or well wishes because that's simply not enough. Regardless, Good luck.
