I just have to say something. I don't get the body shaming people on this site. We are collectively against racism and sexism but there is a small group who insists that fat shaming is okay and will attack anyone who calls them out on it. Yes, obesity is a comorbidity but there's a way to convey that without name-calling and making fat jokes. I suspect many of those commenting aren't skinny themselves and at the very least know and love someone who is overweight so why focus on that instead of the fact that the person was a Trumpster who refused vaccines? Why is the fat joke the first thing the go to for laughs and insults instead of the main concern and that is "wtf is wrong with that person for refusing the vaccine despite all the scientific evidence that shows it helps??" We don't allow racist posts, we've stopped allowing sexist posts (remember all the disgusting comments on the stories of women months ago), why are we still okay with fat shaming? Someone please explain this to me. Maybe I'm just an idiot and a party-pooper but I truly don't get it.

So some ugly and hateful comments are more ugly and hateful than others? Or maybe it’s to others? I’m not not sure it’s not disingenuous to be part of a site that exists to do things most people would consider to be at least rude and for many downright ugly and hate filled. Wasn‘t it Thumper that taught us if you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all. Pretty sure he would be inclusive of dead, southern, Trump loving, christian, anti-vaxxers. Most of the comments here are designed to hurt other peoples feelings. I can’t see how anyone can honestly think their own foibles won’t indirectly be mentioned at some point. We all share at least something in common with a lot of these AVers in fact the only safe assumption we can make is that we don’t share the position on vaccines. If that’s the yardstick then that’s the only actual place to comment on. Then the catharsis and schadenfreude of death there isn’t quite as sweet.
Thank you. There is a mountain of scientific literature that shows that anti-fat bias DOES NOT HELP ANYONE and literally kills people (such as through misdiagnosis and causing people to avoid the healthcare system). Anyone who claims to "trust the science" should reevaluate their stance and actions.
On a personal note, as someone who has a fat partner, friends, and family members, it is so fucking painful and awful to see what anti-fat bias does to them. 75% of the US is overweight/obese, and many many countries aren't much different. This is a worldwide issue that affects a huge percent of the population, and we are hurting these people. We need to do better for everyone's sake.
The fat-shaming is precisely why my wife doesn't want anything to do with this site. She would prefer I have nothing to do with it, because she views me being here as accepting of such people.
I imagine most of those here are cowards in real life, in that they would never do that to someone in public. If they really "care" about someone's weight they don't even know, shouldn't they be calling out every person they see in public?
I agree with you. I am a eating disorder survivor and was bullied about being overweight as a kid. Fixed that in my 20s, bulimic turned anorexic. Therapy and a book called Intuitive Eating was a great help. If you are hooked on drugs or alcohol, those can be eliminated from your life but we all need food to survive. I just joined the online yoga class of Jessamyn Stanley and I highly recommend her book "Yoke"
The fat shaming is stupid. But I would argue misogyny is well and alive here too. Every time we have a widow here, INSURANCE MONEY/she secretly got vaxxed in and was the one who convinced him not to vax bullshit comes up. One of the very recent ones the dude was posting anti-vaxx and RW conspiracy theory garbage on Facebook and predictably gets covid and dies, and the wife, who didn't seem to spend her days posting dumb shit is now being accused of secretly being the one who convinced him not to and needs to be investigated. LMAO.
Oh come on, who doesn't hate fatties?
Speaking from experience, it's a self loathing thing.
