I am very legitimately concerned about the future of the country. My wife is a Mexican citizen, US LPR (greencard holder). I'm sort of ashamed to say, we have actually researched how easy it would be for me to get the Mexican equivalent of a green card (thankfully, answer is very easy due to my marriage to her), and we are actually going to do the paperwork for the kids to claim Mexican citizenship. If Trump is somehow still free, runs, and wins, we may move there. I'm Jewish. I'm not going to be the person who says "how bad can it be?" when Hitler is elected. My wife has a lot of family there, and we have decent savings that would go a fairly long way there. My wife also owns a bunch of land there. Ugh. Come on, Merrick Garland. If you don't lock this fucker up, you're as much of a fucking traitor as he is.

I'm surprised how many on here haven't had it. The only people I knew who hadn't yet been infected were infected in May/June. Vaccines work. Nobody was very sick. Fauci is quadruple vaccinated and was no doubt prescribed paxlovid immediately. He should be fine. Best wishes to him and his family.

@WTF Vax Up It isn't about taste. It's about whoever has the best chance of defeating whoever is the GQP nominee. We do not have the luxury of having taste in 2024. Manchin sucks. He sucks so bad. But I'd prefer him infinitely to any GQP member (possible exception being Murkowski).

@Sen. Ron "Tiny" Johnson Would they prefer DeSantis? How dumb could they be? If you haven't listened to him, find some podcast appearances of Eric Adams and listen to him. He pops up here and there on them -- he recently was on Preet Bharara and was great. He's a little slow to get going, but once he warms up, man, I understand why he won his primary so easily. I listen to him and think he'd completely clean house with the black and brown vote, moderates, and suburban voters. The educated liberal types (of which I am admittedly one) would hold their noses and vote for him, because he's still infinitely better than any republican.

Biden cannot win. It isn't his fault -- no president in office during a period of high inflation, a bear market, and war can win. He needs to recognize this and bow out, and someone needs to have a come to jesus talk with Harris and explain that she cannot win either. Too associated with what has happened, and is even less popular than Biden. My dark horse -- Eric Adams. The GOP is somehow attracting larger portions of black and brown voters. Eric Adams did extremely well with these groups; he runs as a tough on crime cop; he's very moderate; and he speaks like a normal, blue collar person. If he could get through the dem primary, I think he wins back all the black and brown vote that the GOP has won over, while keeping all the anti-Trump college educated vote. Maybe grab Joe Manchin as a running mate, or try a whacky cross-party thing and go with Lisa Murkowski. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd have something like a Warren/AOC ticket sworn in on Jan 20, 2025. But, I don't. I live in the real world, where a moderate candidate is going to be needed for a chance at taking out DeSantis (who will be the 2024 GOP nominee). If somehow Trump is the nominee, I think it'll also take Liz Cheney running as a third party aimed at picking off ultra-conservatives who would never cross over and vote dem, but who are sick of Trump; I hope she's willing to do it if need be.

I see a lot of pro-vax billboards. I don't see vaccine commercials on english-language TV channels, but I've seen a few on spanish-language channels. The ones I've seen on spanish-language tv channels were encouraging vaccinations of children.

@Mary M Don't discount asymptomatic spread, especially among kids. Estimates based on serological studies are that over 50% of kids in the US have had covid (so much for it not spreading in schools). There's no way that we have missed so many of those. When my family all had it during the omicron wave, my youngest (5 at the time) was asymptomatic. Tested positive, was around her symptomatic sisters the entire time, never had a symptom. If everyone else hadn't had symptoms, we'd never have known she had it. Between asymptomatic spread among kids, and between kids having very mild symptoms, that right there is missing a lot. Also, home testing drastically lowers counts among all ages. I know so many vaccinated people who had minor symptoms during the omicron surge, tested positive via home test, recovered without treatment. Moving on, how many vaccinated people have had minor cold symptoms, never tested, and it was actually covid?

Kind of an odd statement. In the US, death numbers are now totally decoupled from case numbers. Cases fell fairly low, now they're back up to 100k a day, and deaths haven't increased (even taking into account a two week lag). The future is an endless game of whack-a-mole between vaccines, antivirals, and covid.

Actually, remdesivir turns out to be about as effective as paxlovid, if it is given via IV and immediately upon receipt of a positive test result. This is... wow. Who fucked up? We were giving remdesivir right from the beginning (Trump even got it), but weren't giving it early, so it wasn't working. We had a near silver bullet before vaccination even started, and didn't utilize it correctly. The future of covid treatment is get vaccinated, get regular boosters, and if you're old/immune compromised/at risk, be treated with whatever effective therapeutic (paxlovid, remdesivir, monoclonals, etc) you have access to as soon as you test positive.

I think calling Trump or Johnson the c-word would be entirely appropriate in America. The issue here is generally using it against women. Not against men who, quite frankly, are absolute c-words.
