When I was in Grade 10, oh so long ago, my history teacher invited a candidate for mayor to come to our class. The candidate was probably in her late 60s and would always run for mayor when the terms were up. Her platform, no pun intended, was that the city needed to build a landing pad for the UFO that would be arriving imminently. "They" were just being held up by our lack of infrastructure on this count. She was immaculately dressed, and always wore white gloves. Of course, this being different times, we did not mock her openly. We asked some pointed questions---like, what evidence do you have that aliens will arrive? Aren't there better things to spend city taxes on a speculative project? Why do you wear white gloves? I felt bad for her, but she held her own while shaking a little. I wondered what our history teacher's purpose was in bringing her in. Looking back, I think it was just to let us know that even the obviously deluded will run for office and it's okay and NECESSARY to challenge them in person. Not for them, because their minds can't be changed, but for us, so that everyone knows what they are dealing with. What we are looking at here is the same. She's just a younger, prettier, equally deluded version of that mayoral candidate. The difference is that she's got millions of equally deluded people buying in to her fantastic world view.
