https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2213920 The current moment in the Covid-19 pandemic is a pivotal one. There is an urgent need to confront a future in which SARS-CoV-2 will remain with us, threatening the health and well-being of millions of people throughout the world. At the same time, it’s important to acknowledge that objectively we are in a better place with regard to the virus than we’ve ever been and that in fact many people believe the pandemic is behind us. This reality compels us to avoid using alarmist language and to offer valid and feasible solutions to bring people along to a new, nonemergency phase of the pandemic. How we craft our policies, programs, and associated messaging in this context and who delivers the messages is as important as ever. "

https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/radiol.2021211396 More than 50% of previously hospitalized survivors of SARS-CoV-2 infection will have abnormality at CT, more commonly in those with more severe acute infection. ■ The most common abnormalities are ground-glass opacity, parenchymal or subpleural bands, reticular abnormality, evidence of fibrotic abnormality, and air trapping. ■ Precise radiologic description is important; the term fibrosis should be reserved for those with clear evidence of fibrosis (traction bronchiectasis or bronchiolectasis, honeycombing, or architectural distortion). ■ Comparison with acute-phase imaging is important to understand the temporal course of abnormality. ■ The long-term outcome of CT changes after COVID-19 and the impact on pulmonary function and quality of life are unknown.

https://journals.plos.org/globalpublichealth/article?id=10.1371/journal.pgph.0000557#pgph.0000557.s001 The COVID-19 pandemic has had intense, heterogeneous impacts on different communities and geographies in the United States. We explore county-level associations between COVID-19 attributed deaths and social, demographic, vulnerability, and political variables to develop a better understanding of the evolving roles these variables have played in relation to mortality. We focus on the role of political variables, as captured by support for either the Republican or Democratic presidential candidates in the 2020 elections and the stringency of state-wide governor mandates, during three non-overlapping time periods between February 2020 and February 2021. We find that during the first three months of the pandemic, Democratic-leaning and internationally-connected urban counties were affected. During subsequent months (between May and September 2020), Republican counties with high percentages of Hispanic and Black populations were most hardly hit. In the third time period –between October 2020 and February 2021– we find that Republican-leaning counties with loose mask mandates experienced up to 3 times higher death rates than Democratic-leaning counties, even after controlling for multiple social vulnerability factors. Some of these deaths could perhaps have been avoided given that the effectiveness of non-pharmaceutical interventions in preventing uncontrolled disease transmission, such as social distancing and wearing masks indoors, had been well-established at this point in time.

https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w30512/w30512.pdf Political affiliation has emerged as a potential risk factor for COVID-19, amid evidence that Republican-leaning counties have had higher COVID-19 death rates than Democrat- leaning counties and evidence of a link between political party affiliation and vaccination views. This study constructs an individual-level dataset with political affiliation and excess death rates during the COVID-19 pandemic via a linkage of 2017 voter registration in Ohio and Florida to mortality data from 2018 to 2021.

https://www.bmj.com/content/bmj/379/bmj.o2423.full.pdf Unlike those other countries, the US hasn’t put in the effort needed to move into a new phase with confidence. Booster coverage, even among older Americans, is abysmal, with only half of vaccinated adults having received a booster. This places the US 73rd globally for booster coverage. Fewer than 6% of immunocompromised Americans—a group that accounted for nearly 1 in 5 hospital admissions during the BA.2 surge—have received Evusheld, a therapy to help prevent covid-19.The US continues to have worse covid-19 outcomes than most of its peer countries. The US’s rate of deaths per capita has outpaced other high-income countries in the last year—lowering the country’s average life expectancy for the second year in a row. We need a full-court press this fall to reverse these trends and reach more of the public with boosters and antivirals. .Let's hope the US get's it's collective shit together
